Project

The “EUropean LABoratories of Role-Play Gaming to promote school social and emotional culture” is a two-year Erasmus+ project (December 2023 - November 2025) aimed at enhancing the mental well-being of secondary and tertiary students aged 13-19.  By incorporating Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TRPG) into the school curriculum, the project seeks to equip students with essential emotional and social skills while supporting teachers in creating inclusive and supportive learning environments. Through TRPG activities, students will develop metacognitive abilities, fostering personal growth

and resilience.

To achieve the intended objectives, the project will develop a practical training course to enable teachers to master TTRPG sessions, enhancing their ability to foster social and emotional competencies. Under the guidance of project partners, teachers and students will have the opportunity to engage in TTRPG activities, testing their effectiveness and building on positive outcomes, such as promoting a supportive school environment and providing resources to address emotional challenges.

As a result, the project will provide participating schools with a dedicated curriculum outlining the methodology, competencies, and supplementary activities. Additionally, a comprehensive training toolkit will be available to help increase the number of trained teaching staff. The complete final handbook will guide future schools in developing TTRPG scenarios tailored to their specific needs. Overall, the schools will benefit by fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.

The EuLabRPG project aligns with the horizontal priority of inclusion and diversity in the field of education, training, and sport by the development of a ready-to-use tool to create Role-Play Gaming scenarios supporting a positive and inclusive school climate, responsive to student's needs, and promoting their self-development through TTRPG activities. In particular, the proposal will adhere to Implementation Guidelines for Diversity Strategy, by also incorporating the concept of “Reinforced Mentorship”, as a process to support participants with fewer opportunities.

The RPG Scenarios directly addresses this concept, as teachers will be able to play a supportive role toward the development of student skills (e.g., self-esteem, self-efficacy, resilience, empathy, emotion recognition, and regulation), promoting social inclusion for those students at risk of exclusion or with difficulties in socializing, promoting adaptive behaviors, and enhancing Social and Emotional Learning competencies (self-management, self-awareness, responsible decision making, social awareness, and relationship skills). Additionally, the project addresses the priority of supporting teachers, school leaders, and other education professionals.

In addition, the project aligns with the horizontal priority within the school environment by tailoring its methodology to the needs of the target groups, aiming to bridge the gap between students and teachers, as well as parents, while encouraging a strong alliance between these stakeholders.

Also, the project contributes to developing a new school curriculum and emphasizing the importance of empowering students individually, especially for those at risk of exclusion, or engaging in anti-social behaviors which can lead to a decrease in school participation in educational activities. Teachers will be equipped to face and overcome the challenges imposed on young people after the pandemic with a new and inclusive approach.

The methodology and tools developed by this project embeds many of the sources and outcomes highlighted in the PISA’s students' well-being results. There will be various stakeholders involved, collaborating to promote social, psychological, and cognitive factors enabling students’ well-being and social support from peers, family, and institutions.
